I have seen a lot of movies that made me cry, movies that made me nostalgic. But I have never seen anything remotely saddest to this movie. The movie felt realistic and down to earth. The ambiance is otherworldly. You would feel the cold and icy weather just by looking at the screen. The movie felt surreal for the most part and became so painfully sad with every passing minute. I am talking about Manchester by the Sea.
If you look up IMDb, it will tell you it’s a movie about a depressed guy who is asked to take care of his nephew after the boy’s father dies. In reality, it’s a lot more than that. It’s a story about a middle-aged man who is experiencing a lot of things for the first time.
When we were young, we thought adults had figured it all out. Then we grew up and found out adults are as lost as children. They are just acting like they know it all. More or less, we all have experienced it. The main character, Uncle Lee, goes through similar phases, and the film portrays it so accurately.
If you are still having second thoughts about watching Manchester by the Sea (MBTS), you should see it for the beautiful scenes and ambiance. It’s shot in Manchester and near the sea. The scenes are refreshing and peaceful.
However, the best part of the movie is the acting. You won’t always find a movie where everyone acts out of their skin. Well, MBTS does exactly that. For starters, the lead character won an Oscar for this role.
That said, a lot of people might find the movie extremely slow. And that’s not wrong. MBTS is a slow burn. It’s realistic and slow. But it’s not boring. I feel like the movie is made for a mature audience. So teenagers, watch it at your own risk!
The storyline has just about enough twists to grab you for 2 hours and 17 minutes. But you don’t watch this movie mainly for the storyline; you watch it to live what the main character is going through. You watch it at midnight to reflect on your life and cry if your heart permits.

Also check out Damien Rice’s songs; I think the overall mood of the movie goes with Damien Rice.
